A little about Hypnobirthing and some FAQ...

KGH is the original UK Hypnobirthing course; designed specifically for mothers in the UK.  The course is constantly evolving to keep up-to-date with the latest evidence and research, and is now also adapted for teaching internationally and in several different languages.

A KG Hypnobirthing Course not only equips you with the hypnobirthing information, but uniquely gives you the knowledge to understand your options and the implications of the choices you make.  As well as teaching you the techniques you need for a successful "hypnobirth", it gives you the information to navigate the system in which you find yourself to achieve the best outcome for you and your baby.  Read more in my blog, entitled "can I buy your hypnobirth?"

You can read the first chapter of the KG Hypnobirthing book here (desktop) or at the bottom of the page if viewing on a mobile device...

How Much is the Course?

The fee for each couple is £50 deposit, then £228 for a group course or £296 for private 1:1 course.

See the Course Contents page for full details of what this covers.

Instalment options are always available to suit your budgeting requirements.

Most families will pay the £50 deposit very early in their pregnancy and then the remaining balance in instalments of their choosing, making the final payment, before the end of their course.

I don't want cost to be a barrier for families wanting evidence-based, individualised care. so, if it would be for you, let me know.

Does the Father Need to Come to Hypnobirthing class Too?

He doesn’t, but he will be very glad if he did.  Most fathers arrive at the course utterly sceptical and leave extremely enthusiastic.  I don’t expect you to believe in it.  Why should you?  I do ask you to listen to the facts and the logic so you understand how important it is and the difference you as a father or birth companion can make.

The caricature of a father at a birth is someone who is nervous, feeling responsible for the situation she is in, holding her hand and wishing he could help, but not knowing what to do.

A Hypnobirthing father is knowledgeable and able to support her as she gives birth.  He is a huge asset in the birthing room, and many mothers say, ‘I couldn’t have done it without him.’  They have practised before the birth which brings them closer together, and he knows he has played an important part in how his baby enters the world.  This deepens their relationship as a couple, and his relationship with his child.

Will Hypnobirthing Work for Me if I Come on My Own?

Yes, definitely.  Many women have come to the course on their own if they have a husband/partner who is away on business, as a single mum, if it’s a second baby and they can’t find a babysitter for their elder child, or any other reason.  Just remember that Hypnobirthing works, and you are very welcome.

And After the Course – What Then?

Please email or text me if you feel stressed, are put under pressure, or I can help in any way. I can support you all the way until baby arrives and well into your 4th trimester.

What is the Best Format for a Hypnobirthing Course?

We teach the KG Hypnobirthing course in 4 x 3 hour sessions, or two 6 hours on our weekend course. There is no evidence to say that doing it over a shorter time is more beneficial.

Is The KG Hypnobirthing Book and the Colour and Calmness Relaxation CD Sufficient?

People sometimes ask if buying The KG Hypnobirthing Book and the Colour and Calmness CD is sufficient without coming to a course.  The honest answer is, ‘I don’t know’.  For a few mothers it is, for many it isn’t (though it will always make a difference).  The trouble is, you don’t know which category you come into until after your baby is born.  Have a look at my blog post "can I buy your hypnobirth?"                      It might help you decide what's right for you ...

When Should I Do The Hypnobirthing course?

Given the choice, I would advise doing the course after your 20 week scan or when you can after this time, so you can enjoy the benefits during your pregnancy as well as at the birth of your baby.  It is not so much a matter of learning facts so they are fresh in your mind, but more a matter of absorbing the information so that it becomes second nature, but Hypnobirthing works whenever you do it.

Does the fee cover both of us?

Yes, there is no additional charge for the father or birth partner to attend, and most women do come with a supportive partner but you would be very welcome and equally well supported by Paratoi if you attended alone.

How many couples are there in a group?

The size of the groups vary, between 2 and 6 couples depending on room size.  I think it’s lovely to do Hypnobirthing in a small group because you can meet other expectant couples, exchange ideas, and learn from their questions. The groups are kept small enough to be personal, and friendly.

Can you give me a brief history of Hypnobirthing?

“Hypnobirthing is soundly based on established medical knowledge.”

The seeds were first sown with the work of eminent obstetrician Dr.Grantly Dick-Read.

After witnessing a homebirth in the slums of the London Docks in 1913, the mother refused any pain relief and then proceeded to give birth quickly and with no pain. Grantly Dick-Read was truly amazed.

The Mothers comment after giving birth when he asked why she refused the pain relief was “It didn’t hurt. It wasn’t meant to, was it, Doctor?”

This experience was defining, and after a career of working on the battle field and in hospitals he theorized that fear was the overriding cause that led to the pain in childbirth.  At the end of his career he wrote the book “Childbirth Without Fear”.  He hypothesized that when you are fearful, you tense up and the natural birth process is inhibited and becomes longer and consequently more painful.

Over the years his theories have been fully vindicated with research into how hormones work during childbirth.  His principles have been further developed by a number of natural birth practitioners with Hypnobirthing being the most notable and widely practised.  Today Hypnobirthing is known by every midwife in the UK and many have trained in KG Hypnobirthing, including professors of midwifery and NHS heads of midwifery.  It is practised internationally and rapidly spreading throughout the world.

Enjoy a Normal Birth with Hypnobirthing...

In the words of Katharine Graves...

"Regularly these days, I hear of a woman who gives birth quickly and comfortably, and I think, ‘Yes! Isn’t that just amazing?’

But, then I think, "If one woman can do it, given normal circumstances, any woman could do it."

Of course a woman or her baby may occasionally need extra help, and we are indeed fortunate to live in a society where that help is available, but the real question should be, ‘What has gone wrong with our society that a birth like this is considered unusual?’  When we consider this, coupled with the increase in induction rates currently evident (now over 30% in some hospitals) - we can safely say that something, indeed, has gone badly wrong."

With KG Hypnobirthing and Paratoi you learn how to put it right, make the best possible choices for you and your baby and to birth without fear - in whatever birth situation you find yourself.
